Hutchison BEST Terminal-Port of Barcelona

WHAT IS THERMODISINFECTION

ALTIUS developed an innovative thermodisinfection system for containers inside the Hutchison BEST terminal in the Port of Barcelona; the thermal treatment or thermodisinfection consists of the application of a certain temperature for a specific period of time inside the container. Its objective is to eliminate pathogens present in certain goods and not admitted in the import protocols of certain countries. It is a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical fumigation.

APPLICATIONS

Among the most common uses for thermodisinfection are its application on raw wood destined for China and on a wide range of commodities destined for Australia and New Zealand to combat the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB), as described in the protocol established by the Australian Government.

It can also be used to disinfect empty containers so that they are suitable for loading certain products.

ALTIUS is approved by the government of Australia and New Zealand as an official supplier of heat treatment against BMSB pest, under registration number ES4007SB.

Advantages over chemical fumigation:

Residue-free and innocuous treatment.
Treatment approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
Increased operational agility: requires only the positioning ofthe container at the location of the treatment system; no ventilation is necessary.
Much shorter treatment time: between 30 and 90 minutes.
Location within the Hutchison BEST terminal in the port of Barcelona, saving time and costs.

Agile operational process:

Being located inside the Hutchison BEST terminal, the operational process is very streamlined. The container is positioned in the heat treatment area directly upon its entry into the terminal and undergoes heat treatment (30-90 minutes). During the treatment, the temperature is recorded by means of several calibrated probes, positioned at different points for exhaustive control. The treatment starts when all the probes reach the required temperature. These probes record the temperature every 3 seconds with an accuracy of 0.1ºC.

At the end of the treatment, the system itself issues a certificate in which all the treatment data is recorded: container, goods, origin, destination, temperature maintained and time.
